Romanian Citizenship by Descent: Eligibility
Individuals can be granted Romanian citizenship by descent if:
- One or both of their parents are Romanian citizens.
- At least one of their parents or grandparents was a Romanian citizen who lost their citizenship.
- At least one of their parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents was a Romanian citizen who lost their citizenship against their will.

General Documents
- Original or certified copy of your birth certificate
- Original or certified copies of your parents’ and grandparents’ birth certificates
- Original or certified copies of marriage certificates for any married ancestors
- Original or certified copies of naturalization certificates for ancestors who became citizens of another country
- Original or certified copies of death certificates for deceased ancestors
- Original or certified copy of a valid passport or driver’s license
- Original or certified copy of a utility bill or lease agreement as proof of residence
Additional Documents
- Evidence of Romanian ancestry (documents showing Romanian birth or citizenship of parents or grandparents)
- Affidavits from relatives or friends attesting to Romanian heritage or connection to Romania
- Sworn translation of all non-Romanian documents by a certified translator
