Portughese Citizenship by Descent: Eligibility
To be eligible for Portuguese citizenship by descent, you must:
- Be born in Portugal to a Portuguese citizen parent.
- Be born outside Portugal to a Portuguese citizen parent employed by the Portuguese State.
- Be born outside Portugal to a Portuguese citizen parent and registered in the Portuguese civil registry.
- Be born outside Portugal with at least one Portuguese second-degree relative who retained citizenship. Demonstrate ties to the Portuguese community.
Additional conditions include:
- Close connection to the Portuguese community (proficiency in Portuguese, residence, or regular visits).
- No criminal record for a punishable crime with a maximum prison sentence of three years or more under Portuguese law.
- No involvement in terrorist activities.
Portughese Citizenship by Descent: requirements
Required Documents for Portuguese Citizenship by Descent
- Long-form birth certificate with complete birth information and Portuguese parents’ names.
- Valid Portuguese passport or ID card of your Portuguese parent(s).
- Parents’ birth registration certificates. For non-Portuguese parents, obtain an Apostille from the country of birth.
- Marriage certificate (if applicable).
